Now That You’re Bloated and Uncomfortable, What Are Your Options?

It was a weekend of overdoing it. You went and drank ALL the drinks at #JJW, konko’d below AGAINST your doctor’s orders, still went out on Saturday night, and then got up for Beach rocks on Sunday morning. Now, all you can see, hear and smell is food and drinks.

The discomfort slowly creeps up on you. All of a sudden, your breathing becomes laboured. Your belt is tearing into your flesh and your waist trainer is losing its training. Your chest feels heavy, head absolutely light, your stomach is both numb, and exceedingly self-aware.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully overdone it and now you’re struggling.

I’m sorry, I have to laugh. What were you thinking, love? What were you thinking? Now that you feel sick — and are probably dying — of indigestion (or are simply hungover), you’ll be looking for some form of relief.

Luckily for you, I am an experienced eater. I know all about indigestion, constipation, acid reflux and everything in between. As always, I’m here to help you since you simply won’t do it yourself. Here’s a list of food items which can provide you and your stomach some form of relief while you and your brain rethink your life decisions:

Water

While I’m not sure if water is considered a food item, I am sure that it’s great at relieving gastric discomfort; particularly indigestion and constipation.

I’m almost certain that while you inhaled all the food you could find over the weekend, you didn’t hydrate with the same intensity. Now, you’re dehydrated and uncomfortable.

Dehydration — and irresponsibility — are common causes of constipation and indigestion. Relieve your insides by drinking ample amounts of water, cold or room temperature.

Ginger

A fragrant, savoury root, ginger is excellent at relieving indigestion. This is because it can reduce the stomach acid present in your guts, providing you with some relief.

To use ginger for indigestion, drink a cup of ginger tea, ginger ale or ginger water. Ginger water can be made at home with one or two pieces of the root in four cups of water. If you think you deserve it after such a gluttonous display, feel free to add lemon or honey for a bit of flavour.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda — also called sodium bicarbonate — is another effective solution to your bad habit of not knowing when to say no.

Baking soda is effective at relieving both indigestion and acid reflux when it’s consumed. It can also help with bloating and gas.

Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with 4-5 ounces of warm water and drink up to experience relief.

You’re want to be careful, though. While baking soda is non-toxic, consuming it in large amounts can make you constipated or give you diarrhea. Talk about from the frying pan to fire. I have to laugh… again.

Bananas

Personally, I don’t think anyone should be putting bananas in their mouths. However, since you obviously don’t have any restrictions in that arena, you might as well go for it, yeah? Right? Awesome.

Bananas are exceptional at relieving acid reflux and heartburn. This is because bananas coat the lining of the oesophagus, providing relief from the burning acid.

That aside, bananas contain pectin, a soluble fibre, which keeps food moving along the digestive tract. This in itself aids digestion.

Apples

Apples are an excellent fruit. They also contain a slew of vitamins and minerals which can help you feel better after pigging out all weekend long.

Apples contain copious amounts of fibre as well as sorbitol and fructose. These vitamins and minerals aid in digestion and preventing constipation.  Apples also have a great water content but that doesn’t take preeminence over drinking actual water.

Eat an apple or two today, to relieve your self of misery today!

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a mild laxative, making it a perfect option for people who are constipated and in need of relief. This is because the oil can lubricate materials which pass through the intestines, thereby easing the digestive flow.

You can use olive oil by slurping down one or two tablespoons. The texture may be a bit weird but it’s weirder being uncomfortable and bloated.
