EDL Bites: Exploring Loompaland’s Dessert Menu
When we eat (or drink) somewhere and don’t try enough things on the menu to give it a full, well-rounded review, we sum up our experience in an ‘EDL Bites’ post instead. Enjoy!
Loompaland
For a quick bite before heading to the beach at Sol, or for a much-needed post-election sugar binge, Loompaland is a pretty decent place to stop by. It’s a gelato and dessert store at the Box Mall, right beside the beach, and for under 10k, you can enjoy their reasonable range.
We stopped by this week to try a few things off the menu. In typical Nigerian fashion, a few options weren’t available, but they had 8 gelato flavors available. We settled on pistachio because PISTACHIO ANYTHING 🫶🏾 and after a bit of a tug of war, the crepe batter was prepared so I could give the Lotus Crepe a whirl.
I have to say, both things were delicious.
The undefeated pistachio gelato champion in Lagos is still Hans & Rene (that’s that on that, however, Eric Kayser’s is badass too, though), but Loompaland’s creamy offerings are closely following behind. Truth be told: If I did a blind taste test of H&R’s pistachio gelato and Loompaland’s, I legitimately wouldn’t know the difference.
It was everything good gelato should be: light in texture but dense in flavor, and not overly sweet. It also had a good ratio of ice cream to crushed nuts, and the waffle cone it came in had a crunch and bite that was a good complement to the gelato.
Next up was the Lotus crepe.
All the toppings and trimmings aside (white chocolate sauce, Lotus Biscoff sauce, and crumbled Lotus biscuits), the quality of the crepe was decent, and it held its own in the sea of sweetness. The texture was good, and it had the right amount of chewiness.
My only criticism is that it was drowned in the various syrups, which I’m not very keen on, but if you’re in a particularly calorific mood, this probably won’t be too much of an issue. It was perfectly yummy. If you’re into cotton candy and other child-like treats, they make them here too.
Loompaland is also an unexpectedly good spot for remote work, especially earlier on in the day (they open at 10am). I spent about 2.5 hours ticking off some to-dos, with a proper great view of the beach and the ocean, and the staff were courteous and just went about their business. I have to say I love the atmosphere.
It’s also worth noting that you don’t have to pay an annoying entry fee to access the store, as it’s separate from the beach.
