Best in Lagos: The Local Cuisine Edition
When it comes to proper Nigerian fare, we’re spoilt for choice in Lagos. Is it Amala joints in Lagos Island or the authentic hole-in-the-wall Ofada spots in Surulere? Or is it the fancier restaurants where you can enjoy the best of both — a truly tasty plate and great ambience? Sorted.
Whether you’re looking for a new joint to enjoy a sit-in dinner or somewhere you can order takeaway, here’s a list of some of the best places to find 👌🏾 Nigerian food.
1. Ofada Hut
Where: 110 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi
This is one of my favourite ‘Ikoyi delights’. I can categorically say Ofada Hut serves one of the tastiest plates of Ofada rice in Lagos, with either Obe Ata Dindin or Ayamase. But it goes beyond good Ofada — they also have a variety of soups and swallow, Jollof and even things like Ogi and Moin Moin, if that’s what you’re keen on.
Possibly the best thing is that you’ll find them on most food delivery apps.
2. Afefeyeye Restaurant & Bar
Where: 41 Ogundana Street, Ikeja
If you read my review of this culture-themed restaurant, you’ll understand how Afefeyeye combines the ideal ambience, detailing and menu, especially, to create a memorable experience. Although there’s a takeout option, it’s a great place to check out when you want to take the time to enjoy a proper meal (think: Native Jollof, boli and fish, palm wine, etc.) in an atmosphere that comes alive.
3. Ofada Boy Soup Lounge
Where: 90 Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere
Serving a wide variety of Nigeria’s local soup favourites, like Efo Riro and Okro soup, Ofada Boy Soup Lounge is a haven on the Mainland for people who love indigenous food. Here, they serve a bowl of palm wine in the ‘ways of our forefathers’, in a locally-made calabash (keregbe), which I just love. Also, the traditional décor and detailing create a lovely atmosphere to enjoy a nice meal.
4. Delta Pot
Where: 18B Emma Abimbola Cole, Lekki
Meanwhile, if you think boli and fish is the best food therapy Southern Nigeria has to offer, Delta Pot will show you how wrong you are. From the Isi Ewu to the house favourite, Banga soup served in a traditional clay pot, Delta Pot understands the assignment and is a must-try.
5. Mama Cass Restaurants
Where: 4A, Oyeleke Street, Oregun/Alausa, Ikeja
Mama Cass Restaurants is one of Nigeria’s OG spots for good homemade-esque meals. It was first founded in 1983 as a mama put spot, but Mama Cass has since grown into a chain restaurant with branches from Lagos, to London and New York. 39 years later, they’re still serving up food that makes my tummy (and literally thousands of others) very happy.
6. Terra Kulture RESTAURANT
Where: Plot 1376 Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island
Long before Nok came on the scene, Terra Kulture had been winning at this game. On its menu, you’ll find everything from Ewa Agoyin and Agege bread to yam pottage (Asaro) and peppered meats, and it’s clear a lot of care and attention goes into making the food. Terra Kulture has always provided the whole package — a centre of African excellence, whether that’s in its restaurant, the culture arena or art gallery. Give them their full props.
