EDL Bites: Is Pinkberry’s New Flavour Chocolatey Enough to Get Our Stamp of Approval?


The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you become a froyo person. I was indoctrinated into the frozen yoghurt cult in 2010, while still at University, and it’s been a steady love affair since — for a variety of reasons, two of the most important being:

  • I was conscious of my weight, and eating froyo, rather than ice cream, ‘tricked’ my brain into feeling I was making better health decisions

  • It’s just such a different experience from ice cream, taste, texture and experience-wise

So when Pinkberry landed in Nigeria in 2012, a move I could never have predicted, I was officially in heaven. Since then, I’ve tried almost every flavour on the menu and gathered more disciples, but my favourite has always been the Chocolate Hazelnut (previously the only chocolate option on the menu), with a variety of very specific toppings that have to include yoghurt chips. I believe they once discontinued these harmless, beautiful little chips a few years ago and I almost started an online petition, because WHAT?? Thankfully, it wasn’t long before they brought them back.

Pinkberry’s Chocolate Explosion

It’s recently gotten even chocolatey-er at Pinkberry. They’ve recently launched a new flavour — the ‘Chocolate Explosion’. It’s perfect for choc heads because it’s just the right amount of sweet, richer than the Chocolate Hazelnut, yet light enough for you to enjoy without feeling like you just had a half-tub of Ben & Jerry’s chocolate fudge brownie (which there absolutely is a place and time for).

I had the regular size of the new flavour with my beloved yoghurt chips, honey almond granola and toasted almonds as toppings (I’ve always liked that you can make your order as healthy or as decadent as you want, but I say “God forbid” to gummy bears in frozen yoghurt or, for that matter, ice cream). The only downside for me was I was somehow expecting a slightly more intense chocolate flavour, but taking into account that frozen yoghurt is made with milk and not cream, it’s understandable; maybe it wasn’t the most realistic expectation. I enjoyed it all the same and ate every last spoon.

Next time I’m at Pinkberry, I'm certain I’ll try my very hardest to go for a woke flavour like Mango, fail and then walk away with either of the chocolate options. It is what it is.
