The Official EatDrink Verdict on Domino’s’ Catfish Pizza is Here — And I’m As Shocked as You’ll Be

From the beginning, I’ve been as keen as most of you to give this experiment of a pizza a try. First came chicken suya on a pizza, then came plantain and without warning, we were thrust into a world where catfish on a pizza was an actual thing. As someone who has prides themselves in my absolute lack of food bias, I can’t say I was appalled at the idea of it (I mean, it’s fish on a bit of bread); I was simply doubtful it would be a hit. It seemed like a stretch too far, even for Domino’s Nigeria.

I put it down to desperation, on their part. We could all smell it in the air when competitors, Dodo Pizza arrived on the scene. Suddenly, we didn’t have to tolerate Domino’s “meh” tomato sauce, and choco pockets with very little ‘choco’, and ever-shrinking portions; suddenly, the number of motorbikes speeding past with that signature orange and black logo were growing by the day, signifying that there was a new Big Bad Boss in town and coming for market share hard. Domino’s had to think fast and act even faster.

In came the Spicy Catfish Pizza, “made fresh spicy and super delicious with a perfect blend of green pepper, onions, red chili, pizza sauce, and tasty CATFISH just the way you would love it,” according to the company’s social media. What the pizza giant wasn’t prepared for, though, was the uprising that would soon follow.

So, naturally, we the good people at EatDrinkLagos had to put this “outrageous” pizza to the ultimate test — taking presentation, texture, overall flavour and cost into account. The conclusion? If Domino’s pizza is your thing and you’re accustomed to their style, the Spicy Catfish Pizza is for you (feel free to read that again). If the opposite is the case, steer clear brethren.

I ensured to eat it right out of the delivery driver’s hands to guarantee this pizza got a fair chance, and I enjoyed 3 hearty slices which had:

  • A sufficient cheese pull (key)

  • Just enough catfish chunks to not overwhelm you (2- 3 per pizza, on average)

  • Sweet roasted onions and that bitter-pleasant taste of green peppers I adore

  • A fresh, thick dough

  • Domino’s signature tangy tomato sauce

My point is, all-in-all, it was a fairly pleasant experience and what you would expect of a Domino’s pizza — however, I wouldn't be doing this review justice if I didn’t share my feelings about the cost of these pizzas, which remain largely unchanged. In my humble opinion, ₦4,100 for what would essentially be a ‘small’ pizza in other parts of the world is just not worth it. Have a burger with thick-cut fries instead, and a good nap afterwards.
