From Shawarma To Sandwiches, Nigerian Food Vendors Adopt Meal Kits

Meal kits and recipe boxes are not entirely new concepts when you think about it. In 2015, Beyoncé launched her vegan delivery business, 22 Days Nutrition, a platform where users could access recipes and order ingredients for custom meals.

Bearing a lot of similarities to meal kits, this platform enables subscribers to prepare their meals using curated items recommended by chefs and experts.

Although Nigerian business owners are notorious for avoiding transparency, some food vendors and even restaurants like HSE Gourmet have adopted recipe boxes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This development comes at an interesting time where restaurants are closed leaving most people spending ample time in their kitchens. Moreover, meal kits can serve as a deconstruction of a chef-curated dish, thus providing the consumer with an insight into the ingredients responsible for the existence of their favourite meals, especially now that grocery shopping is not exactly convenient.

From stirfry noodles to DIY food boxes, this business model might just be the latest trend in the Nigerian food scene. The pricing ranges from N3,750 to N11, 500, for 2-4 people meal servings

It’s tricky to predict the sustainability of this new trend since food-focused entrepreneurs and restaurant owners are only trying to innovate. Only time will tell. Until then, check out the businesses offering this service below:
