A Guide To Dining At Restaurants In A Post-Lockdown Covid-19 Era
Who would have thought that we would need a guide to eat out in our favourite restaurants?
The truth is that corona is still outside, so as much as the world is trying to get back to a semblance of normalcy, we are all still at risk of contracting the virus.
Right after Lagos state government sanctioned the reopening of restaurants over a month ago, many people understandably went out in droves to their favourite restaurants after almost six months of lockdown. Now that there are alleged rumours of poor social distancing in some ‘popular restaurants’, we decided to compile a quick guide to eating out this period, if you’re yet to enjoy a safe dine-in experience post-lockdown.
1. Do your research before you go out
Restaurants, bars and other entertainment centres are working under strict guidelines set down by the government to contain the spread of the virus. This means that if you don’t do your research, you might not be allowed entry to some places. Check online first or call to be sure of the restaurants’ opening times, reservations policy, guidelines for diners, and even reviewed prices when it applies.
2. Be patient with waitstaff while you observe social distancing
It might be frustrating to wait in line or be required to stay a certain distance from people, but it is a necessary inconvenience. Respect people’s personal space too. Don’t stand too close when talking to people, or flout restaurant rules about the maximum number of diners per table. Cough or sneeze into a napkin and dispose of it immediately.
3. Don't forget your mask and face shield
You shouldn’t be going out without them anyway, and even less when you’re going to be in a crowd of diners. Most restaurants require a mask or face covering to enter the premises, and you might also have to submit to a temperature test. Once inside, wash your hands before you get seated and keep washing your hands at every opportunity you get. Having your own hand sanitizer and wipes is an added bonus for your safety.
4. Dine out in smaller groups
Eating out with friends is awesome, but considering the times, it’s prudent to reduce your friend groups to 6 or less. This is in line with Lagos state’s regulations for restaurants.
5. Go cashless and tip generously
Reduce your contact with potentially infected materials and people by going cashless as much as you can. As a bonus, please, tip your servers. It has been a tough year for all of us, but the hospitality industry, in particular, took a huge hit. It’s been over six long months of unemployment for many restaurant workers and a tip will go a long way in helping them find their feet.
