8 Tried-and-Tested Tips For Making Healthier Choices When Eating Out

Something as simple as sharing a platter with your date or opting for water, rather than your beloved margarita, can help keep you on track to meeting your #bodygoals for 2022. Try one or two of these 8 clever tips (that actually work) on your next night out and thank us later!

Eat before going out

Sounds a little contradictory I know, but having a little meal (even just garri, with cold water and groundnuts) means you’re not turning up to the restaurant starving and are more likely to make smart choices for your body.

Ignore the “free” bread

I mean, truthfully, unless it’s freshly baked and smells like heaven. In that case, have one with a thick slab of butter and let bygones by bygones, you didn’t kill anybody. If it looks meh, probably not worth the calories.

Take drinks off the table

We all enjoy a good chapman or strawberry daiquiri with lunch, but if you’re on a weight loss journey or looking to make healthier choices, it’s best to stick to water while you’re out and focus on having a really great meal.

Swap one thing for ANOTHER

If you really want to tuck into that cheesecake for dessert (because Lagos is hard and you deserve it), why not have a lighter main? Tacos instead of a burger, oven baked fish and chips instead of deep fried, shrimp stir fry instead of fried rice — you get the gist.

EMBRACE GROUP DINING

You’re more likely to eat less when you’re sharing a platter with friends, for instance, or going fifty-fifty on a big bowl of pasta with a date. PLUS, you tend to save money when you order as a group or get bigger portions you can share.

Share your dessert

You should absolutely enjoy that sticky toffee pudding the restaurant is famous for, but how about only half of it? That way, you get to satisfy your cravings and possibly even split the cost of it!

Ask a friend to keep you accountable

If you really have a tendency to go overboard at restaurants, ask a friend to help keep you in check, and agree on the signs they should be looking out for.

Try a weight loss app

Apps like Shredder Gang and PlateJoy can go a long way in helping you stay on track while you eat out (and at home too), so give them a shot!
