Review: Gaby (Victoria Island)

My partner's birthday was around the corner, so I decided to treat us to a posh dining experience at Gaby, a Mediterranean restaurant I'd been eyeing for some time. It just so happened that they were also hosting an Easter Brunch special, making it the perfect choice.

Booking a table was a breeze with the 'Reserve' feature on their Instagram page, which led me to an online form. The form was quite detailed, asking for any special requests, allergies, and the purpose of our visit, with options ranging from birthdays to wedding receptions.

We arrived at Gaby on Easter Sunday in the late afternoon, and to our surprise, it wasn't packed. This was a bonus as it set the stage for a cozy date. The staff greeted us warmly, and the restaurant exuded elegance. When I was handed a stool for my bag without asking, I knew I'd picked the right spot.

After settling in, we perused the menus. I was slightly underwhelmed by the plain cardstock paper they used, but that didn't stop me from ordering the Brioche French Toast and their signature Virgin Passion Fruit Daiquiri. My partner chose the Chef's Special Brown Rice and the Volcanic Sunset cocktail. There were no starters on the brunch menu, so we skipped to dessert and ordered a White Chocolate Mousse.

Volcanic Sunset

Our drinks arrived within 15 minutes, followed by our meals shortly after. The whole process took under 20 minutes, which I found impressive. The Daiquiri was fruity and delicious without being overly sweet, and the Volcanic Sunset was a perfect blend of fruitiness, sweetness, and creaminess with a strong gin flavor.

Brioche French Toast

The French Toast was divine, and the combination of nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon was heavenly. The Chef's Special Fried Rice was perfectly seasoned, and the grilled prawn chunks added a nice touch. The only downside was the sunny side up egg, which was more like an omelette.

White Chocolate Mousse

The dessert was nothing short of exquisite. The mousse was moist and rich, and the layer of honey on top took it to another level. My only gripe was that the staff seemed to have forgotten my request for a complimentary birthday chocolate cake. However, after a quick reminder, they were apologetic and had a slice ready within 30 minutes.

Overall, our experience at Gaby was top-notch, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for a special occasion or a date night.
