Scoop’d

Last Thursday, I was having one of those days where nothing in the freezer could satisfy the hole in my soul belly, no matter how much I love my basmati Jollof or Egusi Ijebu. I was left with very little choice but to ignore both sapa and my better judgement, and order something in.

Fortunately, there’s a tiny little Scoop’d store that’s just moved into the neighbourhood and I’d been quite keen on trying out their sandwiches. After a quick browse, I decided their Waffl'd Crispy Chicken (according to their website, made up of a plain waffle + chicken strip + suya sauce + tomato + pickles) would do just the trick and in less than an hour, it was on my kitchen counter.

It’s safe to say:

THEY HAVE A NEW CUSTOMER 🤟🏾

As much as I love chicken and waffles together, I’m always more into the waffles than anything else. Scoop’d’s was the right texture, colour and flavour — fresh, chewy (in a pleasant way, not like awful), golden brown and sweet enough for you to feel like you’re eating something indulgent, but not sickening.

The chicken strips had been bathed in suya spice, which was new for me (because I’ve only ever had American-style fried chicken with waffles) but it was well-seasoned and totally worked. The sweet, spicy and savoury combo was a welcome experience in my mouth. The creamy sauce and fresh tomatoes, in between the layers, also went a long way in adding to the overall experience. I should state here that there were no pickles in the sandwich, unlike what the menu on the website claimed, but such is life. I like pickles, but what the hey?

My only single regret was that I didn’t get to heat the sandwich up in the microwave before attacking it, but that’s on IKEDC. Oh, and also that I didn’t have a chilled bottle of MG Spirit Vodka Pineapple — my new obsession — to wash it down nicely.
