8 Non-Alcoholic Cocktails (Mocktails) To Try In 2020
Not everyone wants or enjoys alcohol, from the Muslim who avoids alcohol for religious reasons or the people observing Dry January (how’s that going?) who still want to turn up at the bar. Enter ‘mocktails’!
A mocktail is basically a version of the cocktail that doesn’t contain alcohol. The alcoholic component is usually replaced with something else that has the same bite like grape juice for wine, or sparkling apple juice for apple cider.
Whether you're keeping it halal or your new year resolution is to drink less alcohol (or you just can't drink for personal reasons), you should try one of these 8 mocktails on your next outing.
1. Chapman
Chapman has bragging rights as the most popular mocktail in Nigeria, with origins in the prestigious Ikoyi Club. People might argue that this drink is for basic people, but the best thing about it has to be how universal it is. You could walk into any bar and get their own take on this refreshing drink, but it will still undeniably be chapman.
2. Piña Colada Mocktail
A classic piña colada has one part coconut cream, one part white rum and three parts pineapple juice. Leave out the rum and you have pure, beachy, mocktail deliciousness.
3. Strawberry-Banana Margarita
Replace the triple sec and tequila in a classic margarita with fresh-squeezed lime juice and orange juice, and blend with bananas and strawberries. It might not look like a classic margarita, but it works.
4. Mockmosa
If you’re keeping things alcohol-free at brunch, you can still enjoy an alcohol-free mimosa. Mimosas are made with orange juice and champagne, which can be substituted for grape juice.
5. Apple Mojito
Apple juice, lime juice, club soda and mint makes a refreshing virgin mojito mocktail. You can leave out the apple juice if you’re trying for a classic mojito taste. You’ll get all the refreshment (and Instagram-worthy pictures) without the buzz.
6. Strawberry Daquiri
A ‘virgin’ strawberry daiquiri is blended with strawberries, fresh lemon juice and lemonade. It looks exactly the same, you might not even miss the rum!
7. Virgin Martini/Zobotini
James Bond’s favourite drink can still come ‘shaken, not stirred’ and without a drop of alcohol! Skip the vermouth and gin and substitute instead with tonic water, lemon juice, some bitters and green olive juice. You can add a dash of apple juice to elevate your mocktail to an appletini, or zobo for a zobotini.
8. Kitchen ButterFly’s Agbalumo-Soursop Mocktail
Kitchen Butterfly’s mocktail invention has it all: it is citrusy, sweet, fresh, sour and has a creamy finish. It’s a combination of her soursop cream and agbalumo lemonade, finished with a spritz of lime juice. This is definitely one of those mocktails to make on a lazy weekend and enjoy with friends.
